Pooram a festival or a phrase? Hey, Let me read on.. Thrissur Pooram unites all malayalees on one platform. A popular temple festival of all Keralites. Celebrated with pomp and fame,Thrissur pooram, is mainly held at the Vadakkunnathan Temple located in the heart of the district -- Thrissur. Pooram pronounced as Pu--ram of the Malayalam calendar on the day, forecast as “MEDAM”. Religious differences all disappear at the eve of the festive season.

Why celebrate Thrissur Pooram? The eve displays traditional rituals passed over from ancestors to the new generation. Thrissur Pooram, was devised first by Raja Rama Varma a noted king or maharaja of the time. It(ThrissurPooram), is the largest temple festival eve of all citizens especially in Kerala. Initially organised as a one day festival at Aarattupuzha temple was duly celebrated at the temple premises. This festival brings out the genuine participation and healthy competitions among all the participating temples on the festive eve.

Why do citizens of Thrissur celebrate Pooram with such pomp? A probable answer can be retold by a brief legend behind the festive. On one auspicious day of an incessant rain, the troops were late for the Aarattupuzha Pooram and being late, they were denied access to the prestigious festive procession. At this embarrasing moment of denial, all devotees went to the Sakthan Thampuran(as mentioned a noted king of the time) to recite the story which was then traditionally followed uptill today.

A brief about the Thrissur temples!!--Way back in 1798, all the temples were unified by the great king Sakthan Tampuran where he had all the ten prominent temples combined into one. This event, later on brought all temples to celebrate the grand eve with a mass celebration.As the day of the festive season drew near,he(ie. Sakthan Tampuran) invited all temple priests to pay their obeisance to Lord Vadakkunnathan, the presiding deity of the Vadakkunnathan temple. To enable feasible access and easier festivity, he ordained the two temples into two categories namely–Western Group and Eastern Group. A prominent temple titled as Thiruvambadi Sri Krishna Temple would include locations as Kanimanglam,Laloor,Ayyanthole and Nethilakkvau.

                                                                            The latter group- Eastern Group captioned as Paramekkavu Bagavathi Temple, comprise Paramekkavu temple, Karamukku, Chembukavu, Choorakottukavu and Panamukkamppilly. All the temples are centered around the Vadakkunnathan Temple while paying tributes to Lord Shiva( the presiding deity).

All functions are belived to have been chalked down by appropriate programmable events of the Thrissur Pooram festival by the famous king of Thrissur – Sakthan Thampuran. The main and major participants of the eve are Paramekkavu Bagavathi Temple, and Thiruvamabadi Sri Krishna Temple. Parmakkavu Temple situated at the Thrissur Swaraj Round and the Thiruvamabadi temple at Shornuir road are roughly 500 meters apart. What else do they do on the eve? The Pooram celebration begins a week before the main Pooram( festival). The grand season is marked by the hoisting of the ceremonial flag by participating temples.

Next the turn of Fire crackers. The first round of crackers burst known as Sample Vedikattu happens on the fourth day after the flag hoisting of then Pooram. This is a one hour show by Thiruvamabadi and Paramekkavu Devaswoms.All crackers are burst at the Swaraj Round and is started at 7.15 pm during the dusk. Varsity of innovative patterns and fireworks display are shown with pomp and grand. Where do the elephants come? To attract more visitors, elephants adorned by decroative a decorative piece called Nettipattam. These elephants are then marched on by all for attractive audience.

                                                                                The main Pooram begins now after the flag hoisting on the sixth day after the ceremonial flag hoisting. All temples devotees march and dispaly the order according to the groups formulated above. The main cracking of fireworks is scheduled to take place on at around 3.00 am early morning and ends at 6.00. Finally, the seventh day arrives and here the farewell ceremony is scheduled. Nevetheless, Thrissur Pooram is considered to be the greatest gathering in Asia and is the main festive ground of the nation ( India). This Pooram definitely brings the beauty and tradtions of our ancestors to the front.
